Just 10 minutes from our campground and very close to Luz-Saint-Sauveur (Luz-Saint-Sauveur), Betpouey is a village in the Hautes-Pyrénées perched at an altitude of 1,000 meters in the Barèges Valley, known for its cobblestone streets and its 13th-century Romanesque church. This picturesque village in the Pays Toy region is full of charm and character. The village’s artisans—shepherds and beekeepers—are happy to share their expertise and local products, making Betpouey an ideal stop for anyone seekingan authentic Pyrenean experience.

At an elevation of 800 meters, the village of Viey stretches across a sunny glacial plateau overlooking the Labatsus Valley. One of the smallest villages in the Pays Toy region, it is well worth a visit for its timeless atmosphere. Its cobblestone streets, 15th-century church, and washhouse—withits remarkable architecture —paint a picture of authentic Pyrenean mountain architecture, ideal for lovers of rural tourism and photography.

On the road to the Tourmalet, between Barèges (Barèges) and Luz-Saint-Sauveur, Viella lies at an elevation of 870 m on a plateau overlooking the valley, featuring the Church of Saint-Michel and an altarpiece ranked among the most remarkable in the department. Stone fountains and carved gateways line the quiet cobblestone streets. A unique feature: a 2-kilometer illuminated path connects Viella to Esterre at night, offering a free and poetic evening stroll —perfect after a day of hiking.

At the foot of the ruins of Château Sainte-Marie, Esterre stretches along both banks of the Bastan torrent, surrounded by the Barèges and Gavarnie valleys.The Church of Saint-Étienne, with its Romanesque portal made of variegated sandstone, features remarkable historiated capitals. Five kilometers from our campground, Grust is an authentic Pyrenean village clustered around its Romanesque church, its old washhouses, and its stone fountain. Perched at an altitude of 990 meters, this hilltop village in the Hautes-Pyrénées offers a breathtaking view of the Luz-Saint-Sauveur valley and the surrounding peaks from its orientation table. At the foot of Luz-Saint-Sauveur, at an elevation of 730 m, Saligos is a charming mountain village nestled on the right bank of the Gave. This former medieval feudal stronghold retains its authentic charm. As you wander through its narrow streets, discover the Romanesque church with its gabled bell tower and 13th-century altarpiece, the houses and barns arranged in terraces, and a beautiful view of the Hautes-Pyrénées mountains —a preserved example of Pyrenean rural architecture.

Located between Pierrefitte and Luz-Saint-Sauveur, at an elevation of 760 m, Chèze is a typical village in the historic province of Lavedan. Its mountain-style houses clustered around the Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, its washhouse, and its dovecote—listed as a historic monument —lend it an authentic and picturesque charm, making it ideal for nature tourism and hiking. Eight kilometers from our campground, at the foot of Pic du Viscos (2,141 m), the village of Viscos perches like an eagle’s nest on the schist cliffs overlooking the Luz Valley. Its cobblestone streets, traditional stone architecture, and small, flower-filled squares create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, typical of the most beautiful hilltop villages in the Hautes-Pyrénées.
