The Pic du Midi Observatory, a starship
The Pic du Midi Observatory is a world-renowned center dedicated to astronomical and meteorological observation since 1873, affiliated with the University of Toulouse. For more than 150 years, generations of researchers have advanced our understanding of the Sun, cosmic rays, and Earth’s atmosphere. The solar telescope allows visitors to observe the Sun’s surface and corona, while the museum space interactively traces researchers’ contributions to our understanding of the solar system. The Pic du Midi is also home to Europe’s highest planetarium, housed in the legendary Baillaud Dome. Another point of pride: the site is part of the Pic du Midi International Dark Sky Reserve, one of only two in Occitanie, guaranteeing exceptional nighttime viewing conditions. All the more reason to plan an evening visit to admire the stars above the clouds—an unforgettable experience, summer or winter.
Col
The Col du Tourmalet, a legendary stage of the Tour de France
Since 1910 and its first ascent during the Tour de France, the Col du Tourmalet has become a symbol of cycling worldwide, having been crossed more than 80 times in the history of the Tour de France. The highest road pass in the French Pyrenees, at an elevation of 2,115 meters, it connects La Mongie to Barèges at the foot of the Pic du Midi. For cyclists, two iconic climbs await you: a 19-km route from Luz-Saint-Sauveur—just a short bike ride from our campground—with an average gradient of 7.4%, or a 17-km route from Sainte-Marie-de-Campan. At the summit, the Maison du Tourmalet welcomes you with its immersive dome, its official Tour de France shop, and its exhibition dedicated to the starry sky.
The largest ski area in the French Pyrenees
At the foot of the Pic du Midi, the Grand Tourmalet ski area—created by the merger of Barèges and La Mongie—is the largest ski area in the French Pyrenees, with 100 km of trails spread across two complementary slopes. The Pic du Midi itself is the premier freeride destination in the Pyrenees: from the 2,877-meter summit, experienced skiers can descend 1,700 meters over 10 km of wild and spectacular terrain. An off-piste experience that few mountain ranges in Europe can offer, set in an absolutely exceptional natural setting.
