Tucked away in the heart of the Pays Toy, just a stone’s throw from our campground near Luz-Saint-Sauveur, this picturesque mountain village, perched at an altitude of 740 meters, is much more than just a stopover on the way to the major attractions of the Hautes-Pyrénées. A historic spa town, a charming village with authentic narrow streets, and the ideal base camp for exploring the valleys of Luz, Barèges, and Gavarnie. Luz-Saint-Sauveur welcomes you year-round, offering a blend of nature, sports, culture, and heritage. It’s a destination that perfectly combines the fresh air of the Pyrenees with the richness of centuries-old history.
Discovering Luzé’s Heritage
Long known simply as Luz, the village—located just a few minutes from Camping Le Hounta—is brimming with historical landmarks that tell the story of centuries of life in the Pyrenees. The Church of Saint-André, known as the “Templars’ Church,” with its crenellated walls and fortress-like appearance—built in the 12th and 13th centuries—is its most striking symbol. Perched on a rocky outcrop high above the village, the ruins of Château Sainte-Marie—listed as a historic monument since 1930—offer a breathtaking view of the valley. But it was the visit of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie in July 1859 that would transform the village forever. The Napoleon Bridge, commissioned by the Emperor in 1859 and opened to traffic in 1861, spans the Gave de Pau at a height of 70 meters with a dizzying and spectacular 68-meter-long deck. The Solférino Chapel, the Luz thermal baths—designated as historic monuments since 1975—and the museum space at the Maison Gradet-Poque round out this exceptional Napoleonic heritage.
