Don’t miss this under any circumstances during your stay in Barèges: the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, rising to an altitude of 2,877 m. From its summit, the view is breathtaking: 300 km of mountains stretch out before you, from Catalonia to the Basque Country, offering an exceptional panorama of the Pyrenees.
To take in this spectacular view, visitors can enjoy panoramic terraces and a glass walkway suspended 1,000 meters above the ground—the famous “bridge in the sky.” It’s a unique experience where thrills blend with wonder.
The Tourmalet Pass

You can’t spend a vacation in Barèges without taking a detour to the Col du Tourmalet, the highest road pass in the Pyrenees. Its name, which means “bad detour” in the local dialect, belies a legendary location: since 1910, the Tour de France has crossed it 87 times (88 in 2025)—an all-time record! Every summer, thousands of cycling enthusiasts flock there to experience the thrill of this legendary climb.
Accessible from our campground and very close to Luz-Saint-Sauveur, the climb up the west slope (18.3 km, average gradient of 7.3%) is an adventure you won’t want to miss. The Grand Tourmalet isn’t just for road bikes: its mountain bike trails also offer immersive challenges for all skill levels.
The Maison du Tourmalet, located at the foot of the pass, is an iconic site that tracesthe history of cycling and the Tour de France in the Pyrenees. It features a permanent exhibition on the legends of the Tour and the riders’ feats, and offers a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the surrounding peaks. The Néouvielle Nature Reserve, a sanctuary of lakes just outside Barèges
Just a short walk from Barèges, the Néouvielle Nature Reserve stands out as one of the jewels of the Hautes-Pyrénées. Established in 1936—one of the first in France—it covers 2,300 hectares and is home to more than 70 lakes with crystal-clear waters—Aumar, Aubert, Orédon, Cap-de-Long—dotting landscapes of granite and centuries-old mountain pines. From Barèges, hikers can access the reserve on foot via the Tournaboup parking lot, for a more leisurely and authentic exploration of this unique mountain range. Chamois, marmots, bearded vultures, and ptarmigans inhabit these unspoiled heights, ranging from 1,800 to 3,091 meters in elevation. La Mongie / Barèges: the Tourmalet Ski Area
Just a few kilometers from our campground, the Grand Tourmalet —formed by the merger of Barèges and La Mongie—is the largest ski area in the French Pyrenees, with 100 km of trails spread across two complementary slopes. Barèges, an authentic Pyrenean village with stone houses, charms visitors with its warm atmosphere, free shuttle buses, and a recreation center for children; La Mongie, at an altitude of 1,800 meters, offers a fully integrated resort at the foot of the slopes, ideal for convenient stays. Downhill skiing, freeriding, snowboarding, ski touring, snowshoeing, sledding, or even dog sledding: there’s something for every member of the family. And at the summit, the Col du Tourmalet overlooks the entire ski area, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the peaks of the Hautes-Pyrénées.
