Camping at Luz Saint Sauveur

Looking for fresh air and wide open spaces for your holidays? Nestled in the heart of the perched villages of the Pays Toy, close to the most beautiful listed sites in the Hautes-Pyrénées, the famous resort of Luz Saint-Sauveur gives you access to vast stretches of green plains in the summer and snow-covered areas in the winter. An ideal destination for combining nature, sport, culture and heritage!

Discovering the heritage of Luzé

Nestled in a deep triangular valley, just a few minutes from Le Hounta campsite, this picturesque mountain village tells us its story. It is the story of a small mountain village perched at an altitude of 740 metres that became a renowned spa and winter sports resort in the Pyrenees. Renowned for its thermal baths, its ski slopes, the purity of its air and the beauty of its landscapes, Luz Saint Sauveur is also marked by the seal of history, in particular since Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, regulars of the thermal cures, stayed there in the middle of summer 1859.

The village of Luz (in Occitan "Lus e Sant Sauvaire") still has many reminders of this period. Starting with the chapel of Solférino, recognisable by its Byzantine tower, a reminder of the Emperor's victory over the Prussians. Further on, it is the Napoleon Bridge that catches the eye. Inaugurated in 1863, it was built to allow Empress Eugenie to come and "take the waters" at Saint-Sauveur. Particularly impressive at 65 metres high, it was even more so at the time.

Among the buildings not to be missed are the thermal baths of Luz, founded in the 16th century, which are now classified as historical monuments. The village has acquired a great reputation in the treatment of respiratory problems. The village also has an older heritage. On the heights of Luz, the silhouette of the Château Sainte-Marie, crowned by beautiful ruins, remains impressive. Built in the 11th century by the Count of Montblanc, Lord of Bigorre, the ancient fortress offers a breathtaking view of the valley.

Walks and hikes in the heart of sumptuous landscapes

From a simple family walk to a sportive mountain hike, Luz Saint Sauveur is a very popular playground for hikers and walkers. Located at the crossroads of the valleys of Luz, Barèges and Gavarnie, the village is the starting point of many hiking routes. On the programme: hiking on the GR 10, itinerant walks, nature outings, photo safaris, trekking with bivouacs and overnight stays in refuges...

The Napoleon circuit (6.5 km) allows you to discover the thermal district of Saint-Sauveur, the Napoleon bridge and the Solférino chapel. Without going too far from the campsite Le Hounta in Luz St Sauveur, you can also hike towards the waterfalls of Mensongé, the lakes of Bastampe and Maucapéra, the massifs of Ardiden, the peaks of Viscos and Cestrède. For experienced hikers, there is a longer itinerary to reach the Aubert lake, in the heart of the Néouvielle nature reserve,

And for mountain bikers, fat bikers and downhill riders, Luz Saint-Sauveur offers a full-size sports ground between mountain villages, mountain pastures and forests. Another idea is to go for a ride on horseback or with a donkey on the Compostela paths or on the road to the hilltop villages (Viscos, Sazos, Viella, Viey, Sers...).

The mountains in summer are a huge playground for the whole family

Adrenaline junkies, budding acrobats or adventurers in search of new sporting challenges: Luz Saint Sauveur is the ideal destination to try out new experiences and to get the most out of the thrills.

Ready for the big jump? Dare to take the plunge during a bungee jump from the Napoleon bridge. Unless you prefer to try the Via Ferrata under the famous historic bridge over the Gave de Gavarnie. Are you interested in accrobranche? Head to the "En Chêne et Frêne" adventure park to climb to the top of the trees and slide at full speed on the mega zip line that winds its way down over the Luz gorges!

Camping holidays at Luz Saint Sauveur also include the joys of rafting and canyoning in the Hautes-Pyrénées, along the Gave de Pau and on the heights of the Héas canyon. The rivers, streams and lakes of the Luz valley are also popular fishing spots for white water anglers. These experiences will make your holiday in the Pyrenees an unforgettable memory to share.
