Camping near the Cirque de Troumouse

In the Hautes-Pyrénées, the Cirque de Troumouse is a popular destination for hikers. Less well known than the Gavarnie cirque, this jewel of nature reveals to its visitors equally fascinating and impressive landscapes. A visit that is perfect if you are camping in the Pyrenees National Park!

A natural wall in the heart of the Toy country

Bordering Spain to the south, the Cirque de Troumouse is one of the largest cirques in the Pyrenees and in Europe. Situated at an altitude of 2,200 m, upstream from the valley of the Gave d'Héas, the Troumouse wall forms a monumental arena four kilometres long, dominated by the Pic de la Munia. It is part of the Gavarnie-Mont Perdu massif.

The largest glacial cirque in the Pyrenees

Less touristic than the Cirque de Gavarnie, Troumouse is nevertheless worth a visit. First of all for its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for both its natural and cultural landscapes. Then for its mineral hemicycle of eleven kilometres in circumference, the largest and most open of the three great cirques of the Gavarnie valley.

How to get to the Cirque de Troumouse?

To get to the Cirque de Troumouse, you have to reach the valley of the same name. You take the road to Gavarnie (D 921), then the departmental road 922 which crosses the Héas valley. Once you arrive at the hamlet of Héas, you can park your vehicle in the large car park of the Auberge du Maillet. Access to the walks is provided by a small train (for a fee) which takes you to the heart of the cirque. Distance from our campsite in Luz Saint Sauveur: 20 km (30 min by car)

Walks and hikes

The Cirque de Troumouse offers several walks and hikes accessible to all, even with children. You can see marmots, isards, herds of cows and sheep, and admire a rich and varied mountain flora.

The tour of the Cirque de Troumouse on foot: from the Héas chapel (below the cirque), a loop hike which allows you to admire the wild cirque, the Aguila torrent, the Aires lakes or the Vierge de Troumouse (orientation table). Allow about 5 hours return to cover the 12 km of the loop.

After the effort, the comfort. To regain your strength, don't hesitate to make a gastronomic stop at the Auberge du Maillet. The lamb cooked to perfection and the Pyrenean gratin are really excellent.
