Camping near the Cirque de Gavarnie

Make the most of your camping holiday near Gavarnie-Gèdre to discover one of the natural gems of the Hautes-Pyrénées: the Cirque de Gavarnie, a limestone amphitheatre of breathtaking dimensions classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hikers and lovers of the Pyrenees will love it! Discover it.

A true wonder of nature

From the top of its 1,500 m, this immense glacial cirque offers a breathtaking spectacle, that of a spectacular stone amphitheatre 6.5 km in circumference, encircled by 17 peaks exceeding 3,000 m in altitude and watered by the largest waterfall in Europe. Here, the Pyrenees National Park takes on the air of the Great Canadian North. Impressive!

This remarkable natural site seems tailor-made for high mountain hiking. There are many hiking routes to enjoy the beauty of the cirque, whether you are a seasoned hiker or an occasional walker. Of course, the Gavarnie valley offers many outdoor activities, other than hiking, such as cycling, mountain biking, canyoning, via ferrata, climbing, mountaineering or ski touring. In winter, Gavarnie-Gèdre is a very popular ski resort, with 27 runs including the longest green run in the Pyrenees "Les Marmottes" (5.5 km).

A must-do Pyrenean hike

Starting from Gavarnie, the highest village in the Hautes-Pyrénées (1,570 m), an easy hike accessible to all allows you to admire the great rock wall, its grandiose landscapes, and the fauna and flora of the Pyrenees from up close. Distance: 8 km, average time: 3 hours. The campsite's advice: in summer, plan to arrive early in the morning, as the route is very busy in high season.

The Grande Cascade, the highest waterfall in Europe

In the centre of the Cirque de Gavarnie, discover the largest waterfall in Europe, 423 metres high! This great waterfall gives birth to the Gave de Gavarnie, the watercourse that later becomes the Gave de Pau. To reach the waterfall, you have to walk along paths that cross a sandy area. For this hike in Gavarnie, count on about four hours of walking. Departure point: village of Gavarnie, duration: 4h30, distance: 11.6 km, level: difficult.

The Brèche de Roland, one of the most beautiful panoramas in the Pyrenees

Overlooking the Gavarnie cirque, the Brèche de Roland is a classic of hiking in the Pyrenees. It is a spectacular natural gap that joins the French and Spanish sides of the Pyrenees, the Gavarnie cirque and the Ordesa canyon.

According to legend, the breach was opened by Roland, Charlemagne's nephew. The Frankish warrior would have preferred to break his sword Durandal against the rock so that it would not fall into the hands of his Saracen enemies during an ambush. But it was the rock that broke, opening a natural "door" 100 m high and 40 m wide.

The favourite hike of the campsite: from Gavarnie, follow the road to the Port de Boucharo (D923) and park in the car park at the Col des Tentes. An easy hike to the Sarradets refuge (2,565 m) with a passage through the Cascade du Taillon (beware of slippery rocks), then a 45-minute walk to reach the famous Brèche de Roland. Duration: 3 hours of ascent and 2 hours of descent, distance: 11 km.
