Camping near Cauterets

20 kilometres from the Hounta campsite in Luz Saint Sauveur, discover Cauterets and its almost cinematic setting. Every summer, thousands of visitors and hikers come to admire the Pont d'Espagne site and its famous waterfalls, the Lac de Gaube and its glacial valley. In winter, ski lovers enjoy one of the snowiest destinations in the Pyrenees. Not forgetting the thermal baths of Cauterets, renowned for the therapeutic virtues of its naturally hot and sulphurous water.

A village with an exceptional heritage and a historic spa

Cauterets is also a charming Pyrenean village with a city feel, once frequented by many celebrities such as the Emperor Napoleon III, Sarah Bernhardt, Maurice Chevalier, Léon Blum and Louis Blériot. Thanks to its typical 19th century architecture, its grand hotels and its monumental facades, the charm of Cauterets is as strong as ever.

Cauterets' reputation also lies in the quality and benefits of its naturally hot and sulphurous thermal waters. A spa town since the 18th century, the Hautes-Pyrénées resort welcomes almost 6,000 people a year.

Another speciality of Cauterets to discover: berlingots, to be tasted in one of the four confectioneries of the village! At the beginning of the 19th century, this slightly acidic sweet was used to attenuate the sulphurous taste of the water, the sugar optimising the benefits of the cure.

The Spanish Bridge

Located at 1500 metres, in the commune of Cauterets, this jewel of the Hautes-Pyrénées is one of the Grands Sites classés of the Midi-Pyrénées and Occitanie regions. Built in 1886, this stone structure overlooks the tumultuous waters of the torrent, where the Gave de Gaube and Marcadau rivers meet.

From La Raillère, to the south of Cauterets, the Chemin des Cascades (Waterfalls Trail) leads to a succession of beautiful waterfalls before reaching the Pont d'Espagne site. A very pleasant, shady walk with no difficulties for families (distance: 10 km, duration: 2h15 uphill and 1h30 downhill).

The Gaube lake

Located at an altitude of 1,725 m, Lake Gaube is the other "star" of the high Pyrenees to discover during your camping holiday near Cauterets. It is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Pyrenees. Like a mirage, the mountain is reflected in the turquoise waters of the lake. The view is magnificent with the Vignemale, the highest peak in the French Pyrenees (3,298 m), as a backdrop.

To get to the Gaube lake, you can take the Gaube chairlift: a 12-minute climb, then a 15-minute walk with no change in altitude. Another option: follow the waterfall path to the Pont d'Espagne, then continue on the GR10 along the river to the Gaube lake (about 1h15).

The ski resort of Cauterets

Nicknamed the "Little Canada of the Pyrenees", Cauterets also owes its reputation to its two ski areas: the Cirque du Lys and the Pont d'Espagne, which are spread out between 1730 m and 2450 m in altitude.

Regularly ranked in the Top 5 of the snowiest ski resorts in the Pyrenees, the Cirque du Lys area (1850 m) is the kingdom of downhill skiing and snowboarding. A reputation that has been maintained for years, where the pleasure of skiing is mixed with that of the eyes.

First time skiing? Head for the Pont d'Espagne ski area, 7 km from the village of Cauterets. Between fir trees and waterfalls, this is an ideal area for families, with slopes designed for beginner downhill skiing, but also Nordic skiing, sledging and snowshoeing.
