Camping near Barèges

Just 15 minutes from the Hounta campsite, Barèges is one of the must-see stops on your holiday in the Pyrenees. Perched at an altitude of 1250 m, this small Pyrenean village is famous for its thermal spa, the highest in the Pyrenees, its Grand Tourmalet ski resort and its famous Pic du Midi.

The charm and authenticity of a Pyrenean village

Located at the foot of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre and the Tourmalet pass, Barèges is a peaceful mountain village nestled at an altitude of 1,250 m, where some 160 inhabitants live all year round. With its stone houses, its typical narrow streets, its barns and its freshly renovated shepherds' huts, the village has retained the charm and authenticity of traditional Pyrenean villages.

In winter, the play of light on the snow creates a very special atmosphere, while in summer, the view over the village is breathtaking. The footpaths and cycle paths in Barèges offer magnificent views over the valley and the surrounding peaks, notably the Pic du Midi (2,877 m). But the village also owes its fame to its thermal springs, whose virtues have been known for centuries.

The highest spa in France

Want to enjoy a "reBigorrante" well-being experience during your holidays? Head for the thermal baths of Barèges, the highest thermal spa in France! In a majestic setting of mountains and lakes, at the foot of the pic du Midi de Bigorre, the history of Barèges' thermal baths began in the 17th century and became very popular in the 19th century. Many famous curists came here to "take the waters": the Cardinal of Richelieu, Madame de Maintenon, Colbert, Victor Hugo or George Sand...

The Pic du Midi de Bigorre

While you are in Barèges, take the opportunity to conquer the Pic du Midi de Bigorre. Culminating at an altitude of 2,877 m, this emblematic summit reveals one of the most beautiful panoramas of the Pyrenees: 300 km of mountains, from the Basque Country to Catalonia! To enjoy the view, panoramic terraces have been set up at the summit. Not to be missed: the "pontoon in the sky", a glass footbridge suspended 1,000 metres above the void. Thrill guaranteed!

The Tourmalet pass

It is impossible to spend a holiday in Barèges without making a diversion via the Col du Tourmalet, the highest road pass in the Pyrenees. Although its name means "bad diversions" in local dialect, it is nonetheless a must for all ambitious cyclists.

Made famous by the climbers of the Tour de France - the Grande Boucle has passed through here 79 times since 1910 - the Col du Tourmalet is besieged every summer by thousands of aficionados of the Little Queen.

From the western side, the climb is within easy reach of our campsite Le Hounta, in Luz-Saint-Sauveur. Distance to cover: 18.3 km, with an average gradient of 7.3%! The Grand Tourmalet is world famous for road biking, but it also has a number of challenging and immersive mountain bike trails.

The Tourmalet Botanical Garden

Make the most of your camping holiday in Barèges by taking a stroll through this lovely two-hectare garden, which is entirely devoted to the wild flora of the Pyrenees. The Tourmalet Botanical Garden contains no less than 2,500 plant species and varieties from our mountains, classified by environment and altitude. Perfect for learning how to recognise plants and flowers that you don't know yet during your hikes in the Hautes-Pyrénées.

La Mongie / Barèges: the Tourmalet ski area

The Grand Tourmalet ski resort is the largest ski area in the French Pyrenees. It groups together the areas of La Mongie and Barèges, of which the Col du Tourmalet is the central emblem. With more than 100 km of downhill runs and 69 slopes at altitudes of between 1,400 and 2,500 metres, the Grand Tourmalet offers ski enthusiasts the pleasures of great skiing in serene and grandiose landscapes. On the programme: downhill skiing, freeride, snowboarding, ski touring, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding...
